April 15, 2006, CSF held in Hong Kong show, iriver shows a very "alternative" hard-type player, for a time become the focus of attention, then listed a number of outgoing messages, but eventually prove only the user’s guess. Until recently, iriver domestic agent bearing three odd letter has finally said this player has entered the domestic market, will soon officially listed! Its name is E10.

Previous reports on the CSF show, people get only some of the parameters in the E10 message, along with its official introduction, that layer of the veil of mystery has finally been completely lifted -

E10 Total elegant black pearl white and two color options, including the battery weighs only 76 grams, the built-in lithium battery can play up to 6 hours of video or 20 hours of music, with a 1.5-inch TFT LCD display more excellent.

E10 in the control of the more simple, only need about four key down, you can easily in a variety of functions and options in the shuttle, this is a true statement can be completely put aside, get started that would be the mode of operation. This action brought more than just time savings, more importantly, a simple mind.

E10 is an MP3 player. However, this is only its most basic description, it is also the game, video player, ebook reader, image viewer, FM radio, voice recorder, mobile hard drive, digital camera, or partner … … it can even remote control ! You dizzy yet? In short, other MP3 player, E10 has some features that other players do not have, E10 also! Such as MPEG-4 video player, ebook reader, photo browsing function like, and now the mainstream players are already available, but the E10 also supports Flash Lite system that can run hundreds of interesting Flash games (the figure now counting), making it an unprecedented powerful entertainment features. E10 also has a wireless remote control also features can be dozens of TV and the remote iriver U10 base.

Even though the E10 is not the volume, he burst into his stomach filled with a capacity of 6GB micro hard drive, can store about 1,500 MP3 songs, the equivalent of 100 CD. But only use it to keep some songs is overkill, E10 also supports USB OTG function, can serve as a partner to use a digital camera, use digital camera with the E10 only need to connect, you can transfer digital camera photos to the E10 above , no longer have to go back when a bunch of equipment.

The emergence of E10 is actually the best iriver strength reflected in people’s MP3 players, a time of declining freshness, iriver once again proved that as long as there iriver, there will be surprises!

NEW YORK–So, on Monday night, Microsoft threw a party for its brand new Office Live Workspace, also known as Redmond’s answer to Google Apps. Held at the Twelve21 nightclub in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, the guests of honor at the event were Doug Ellin, creator and executive producer of the HBO series Entourage, as well as executive producer Rob Weiss and star Jeremy Piven (you know, “Ari”).

Hotties? Definitely. But I wonder what they would've said if I'd asked them if they know who Steve Ballmer is.

(Credit:
Caroline McCarthy/CNET News.com)

A Microsoft representative provided me with an explanation via e-mail. “This was a party that included users of Office Live Workspace from the limited beta program, some press and analysts as well as guests of Jeremy, Doug and Rob,” the e-mail read. “Not a typical Microsoft event, but major milestone for the product and we did want to celebrate it.”

Logos for the new Web-based software were everywhere, but the hotties in attendance didn’t seem to care, making a couple of us bloggers wonder if maybe they’d been hired to show up and look good. A half dozen computers set up with demos of the Office Live Workspace beta were ignored, for the most part. Jeremy Piven, meanwhile, remained squarely in the VIP section. It was certainly a party, but it definitely wasn’t much of a launch party.

I’m always down for a good time with software geeks, so I rolled in hoping to find some people willing to talk about whether Office Live Workspace really is a formidable answer to the Google Docs that I’ve found myself using pretty frequently. Instead, I walked in to find that the open-bar party was full of models. You know, the sort you’d see at Fashion Week, not a Microsoft party. And aside from my esteemed colleague Natali Del Conte of CNET TV, the only two people I recognized there were Pop17 video host Sarah Meyers and CrunchGear blogger (and local tech party staple) Nicholas Deleon.

Oh, well–thanks for the invite and the free Stella Artois, Microsoft. I had a decent time, and I know you guys in Redmond like to put on a big spectacle, but seriously it’s O.K. to invite nerds to parties. We’re very social, honestly.

That’s because EA had its press conference at L.A.’s opulent Orpheum theater, and Activision is about to have its own at a much smaller venue that has no particular distinction that I’m aware of. I could, of course, be missing some great history that this building has, but I doubt it.

But what I think is the most interesting element of the new game is the so-called Music Studio.

This is, as Bright put it, a mix of YouTube and Billboard, because songs that are uploaded can be ranked by the entire Guitar Hero community.

There’s also an all-new drum kit, and one of the interesting things about this is that it is possible to plug a professional drum kit into it.

So please stay tuned to this live blog, as I’ll be updating regularly, as I have with the Microsoft, EA, Nintendo and Sony press conferences.

There are a lot of different parts of this, but one is that it allows players to define a wide range of different kinds, or even styles of instruments, such as British Invasion guitars, or, say, a Metallica guitar.

Further, the Tunes system gives players tools for making their own album covers, all in the guise of more realism and fun and creativity.

The big Tuesday events concluded in the evening with Activision’s press conference, where the company was expected to talk much more about the future of ‘Guitar Hero’ as well as some of its other important franchises.

Surely, the list of things it will talk about will be heavy with Guitar Hero and Call of Duty.

This is the part of the game that will allow players to create their own music, edit it, save it, and then share it on the Internet.

Bright demonstrates the Music Studio element of ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour.’ This is the part of the game that will allow players to create their own music and then share it online through what is called the Tunes system.

(Credit:
Brian Bright of Neversoft shows off the new ‘Guitar Hero’ guitar during the Activision E3 press conference Tuesday night in Los Angeles.)

Update 8:16 p.m.: The main event for Activision is clearly Guitar Hero: World Tour, and now Brian Bright from developer Neversoft is up on stage now talking about the game, and its new instruments.

Update 7:29 p.m.: The press conference has begun, and Activision publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith started out by talking about some of his company’s performance in the last year.

LOS ANGELES–When Vivendi Universal announced it was buying Activision last December, it was clearly a bid to compete with Electronic Arts for the top spot on the world’s roster of video game publishers.

And this seems sure to be a place where new musical talent is discovered, much as new video talent has come out of the YouTube community.

Among the milestones he mentioned is that since Vivendi bought Activision, the new Activision Blizzard–as the company is now known–is three times as big as the independent company was a year ago.

First, he’s talking about the game’s new guitar, which he says is longer, has a directional knob, and now has an accelerometer. It also has a slider on the neck, allowing for much more control over the play of music.

(Credit:
Daniel Terdiman/CNET News)

But, it all boils down to sales figures, and Guitar Hero: World Tour is sure to bring in many, many millions of dollars. And in the video game business, the bottom line talks.

Lamia said that actor Kiefer Sutherland would be one of the voices in the new Call of Duty.

All in all, Activision had only a few games to showcase, and notwithstanding the new Guitar Hero, I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed by its offerings, particularly because of the company’s place in the video game publishing hierarchy.

The studio provides a wide variety of editing and mixing tools, and all of this is built around the idea of uploading songs to what is called Guitar Hero Tunes.

Further, he said that Guitar Hero users have downloaded more than 18 million songs for the various versions of the game.

Update 7:38 p.m.: Mark Lamia, from Treyarch, the developer of Call of Duty: World at War, is now on-stage to talk about the latest iteration in the hit franchise.

(Credit:
Daniel Terdiman/CNET News)

Regardless, it’s not really about venues at all and it is entirely about game lineups and place in the industry, and it is likely that Activision will have some pretty cool things to show when it gets going, hopefully in a few minutes.

Well, it’s certainly not fair to judge such goals by where companies have their E3 press conferences, but if this year’s media events at the video game industry’s annual confab are any indication, Activision has a long way to go to catch up with EA.

As far as sales go, Activision is clearly leaning heavily on the Guitar Hero franchise. One example of that is that Griffith said that the Nintendo DS version of the game, Guitar Hero: On Tour has sold 10 times the number of copies any other Activision DS game had sold in the same amount of time on the market.

Indeed, Gartner thinks the Mac is going to double its market share over the next three years, with BusinessWeek reporting that an increasing number of corporations are opening up to the Mac.

It’s doubtful that Apple’s numbers could jump 52 percent in one month. However, it’s almost equally doubtful that Microsoft’s stumbling Vista recouped any market share against the Mac, which has been on a tear.

Microsoft has released a new test build of its software as a community technology preview.

While Microsoft doesn’t specify where the software might be used in its own product lineup, it could make for an interesting companion to an offline-compatible version of Silverlight that company execs say will eventually debut.

The software has built-in support for synchronizing relational databases and file systems, including Microsoft’s NTFS and FAT, between devices over any network.

Microsoft is forging ahead with new development software that can link Web services to offline applications, among other things.

“As the company has not yet announced the date of this year’s annual meeting, the amendment will give stockholders who want to nominate one or more directors, including Microsoft Corporation, more time to do so. The amendment does not preclude any party from nominating one or more directors at any time prior to the new deadline.”

The deadline had previously been set for March 14, but now will be extended to a new deadline of 10 days after Yahoo announces the date for its shareholders meeting.

Full coverage
Microsoft’s big bid for Yahoo Click here for the latest on the software giant’s attempt to buy the Net pioneer.

My second bet: Microsoft will take that extra time.

Yahoo announced Wednesday that it is extending the deadline to nominate opposition candidates to its board of directors, a move that will likely delay a hostile proxy fight with Microsoft.

As I predicted last week, Yahoo finds it wise to give Microsoft more time before it has to present its hostile slate of directors. The move also gives the Internet search pioneer more time to consider its options and other suitors, without putting undue pressure on Microsoft to go hostile. (See also: “Yang’s memo: Buying time in Microsoft bid”)

“Yahoo’s board of directors remains committed to pursuing initiatives that maximize value for Yahoo’s stockholders. To the extent that the extension of the nomination deadline has the effect of postponing the nomination of one or more directors by any party, it will allow Yahoo’s board to continue to explore all of its strategic alternatives for maximizing value for stockholders without the distraction of a proxy contest,” Yahoo said in Wednesday’s announcement.

In its announcement, Yahoo stated:

Here we go again. A new company, Reframe It, is launching its Web markup product on Wednesday. Like ThirdVoice and Stickis before it, Reframe It lets you highlight a piece of a Web page, comment on it, and discuss those comments with other visitors to the site.

On this New Yorker article, the user highlighted text (in yellow, left) and then commented on that clip in the Reframe It sidebar at right.

I found using the service a good community experience, although I believe the concept is dated. For one, nearly all sites now have their own communities and discussion threads, and adding another discussion system could actually splinter a community instead of drawing it together. Furthermore, Reframe It currently works primarily through a browser plug-in (on
Firefox and Internet Explorer). Betting on software to carry community is a long shot.

The company, though, is actually oriented around making that software dependency into a strength. CEO Bobby Fishkin wrote to me, “Within mass communities we can let members discuss the news as a community, filter for only comments by members, improve fund-raising by helping improve engagement, and drive traffic for these nonprofits with free branded groups.” By which I think he means that he envisions Reframe It being used sort of like a tour bus for the Web, in which groups can see everything out there, but stick together nonetheless.

The service also integrates with other social networks, Fishkin says, so when you’re trolling the Web with Reframe It active you can easily filter out comments from people outside your circle.

All well and good, but I stand by my assertion that the technology has no hope for widespread adoption as a standalone browser extension. To be fair, the company has a widgetized version of the product that publishers can add to their sites. This lets visitors to the site flag items on pages and chat about them. They can’t, though, just go to any site on the Web and have the same experience, as they can if they have the extension. But the tool for publishers is Reframe It’s best avenue for success, even though it competes with other native comment systems (the ones you get on any blogging platform) as well as third-party comment products like Disqus. Alternatively, I could see this concept getting necessary traction, even as an extension, if it was very closely married to an existing social-network platform like Facebook. Reframe It needs a viral distribution push that I don’t think it will get otherwise.

I also think this approach avoids the kind of self-righteous thinking that Mark Twain pillories in his exceptional “The War Prayer.”

Often, we don’t truly want the consequences of what we want–we simply don’t think through the consequences, and so we blindly demand things that end up being “prayers” of dual meaning. We demand that Microsoft be taken down, that open source crush it beneath the glory of our GPL and freedom.

These sound more like an ultimatum than a request for mutual action, but you get that in Michael’s detailed discussion of these four items. In so doing, I think that Michael does an excellent job of demonstrating how to work with Microsoft:

“I come from the Throne–bearing a message from Almighty God!” The words smote the house with a shock; if the stranger perceived it he gave no attention. “He has heard the prayer of His servant your shepherd, and will grant it if such shall be your desire after I, His messenger, shall have explained to you its import–that is to say, its full import. For it is like unto many of the prayers of men, in that it asks for more than he who utters it is aware of–except he pause and think.

Let’s think big. The open-source community already has more than a billion lines of source code at its disposal, and it’s doubling every 12.5 months, so I think it’s fair to say “we don’t really need your code.” And we also know that money alone is no substitute for the freedom to innovate that we so crave. So what big thing could we do with Microsoft’s cooperation?

commentary

If you’ve never read “The War Prayer,” I’d encourage you to do so now. It’s only a page or two long, and it changed the way I think (and pray). It involves a stranger interrupting the earnest prayer of the people in a small town, praying for their country’s victory in battle. Here’s an excerpt:

Acknowledge where it’s at, and look for constructive bridges between the open-source community and Microsoft. Nowhere is this more evident than in the suggestion that Microsoft and the open-source community work together in disarming our harmful software patent regime, rather than pointing fingers at Microsoft over its refusal to unilaterally disarm.

In fostering a thaw, I hope that Michael and the OSI will take on an increased role. It’s difficult to entrust this sort of lobbying to any one company, including a benevolent one like Red Hat. Some things are best done by nonprofits such as Mozilla, Eclipse, OSI, Open Invention Network, and the Linux Foundation. They don’t have the same financial pressures that a public, profit-driven corporation must have.

Pursue the abolition of software patents with the same zeal they showed in their efforts to get OOXML approved as a standard.
Unilaterally promise to not use the DMCA to maintain control of their Trusted Computing Platform.
Transition to 100 percent open standards (as defined by the OSI, IETF, W3C, or the Digistan).
Stop trying to maintain their monopolies by illegal, anticompetitive means.

There are really four things on my list, but if they did only the first, it would be a meaningful start. The list is:

“God’s servant and yours has prayed his prayer. Has he paused and taken thought? Is it one prayer? No, it is two–one uttered, the other not. Both have reached the ear of Him Who heareth all supplications, the spoken and the unspoken. Ponder this–keep it in mind. If you would beseech a blessing upon yourself, beware! lest without intent you invoke a curse upon a neighbor at the same time. If you pray for the blessing of rain upon your crop which needs it, by that act you are possibly praying for a curse upon some neighbor’s crop which may not need rain and can be injured by it.

Michael rightly notes that Microsoft’s Promise, while certainly improved, still leaves much to be desired. No surprise there, which leads Michael to a thoughtful, probing analysis of what Microsoft could do to fully engage with open-source communities:

But Microsoft is a symptom. Michael groks this, and his recommendations appropriately take this into account. Microsoft did not invent proprietary software. It may well benefit from proprietary lock-in, but is not the cause of it, and it’s unreasonable to expect Microsoft to unilaterally disarm to the detriment of its shareholders.

No, our work is to change the industry, not the behavior of one of its participants. The place to start (and end?) is patents, which most everyone seems to hate, yet most everyone also seems to continue arming themselves with patents in a mad race to mutually assured destruction. A cold war, all over again.

Sunday morning, and I couldn’t help but ponder Michael Tiemann’s excellent note on Microsoft’s revised (and improved) Open Specification Promise and “what Microsoft can do for open source.”

In the wake of a nasty spat with former partner Intel, a reorganization, and mounting criticism, Nicholas Negroponte is looking for a chief executive for his One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization, according to BusinessWeek.

“I am not a CEO,” OLPC Chairman Negroponte said in an interview with the magazine. “Management, administration, and details are my weaknesses. I’m much better at the vision, big-picture side of the house.”

The group has faced its share of challenges in the three years since it was formed. Its XO laptops initially cost $188 each instead of the anticipated $100, some countries are scaling back their deployment plans and Intel recently quit, claiming OLPC was pressuring it not to compete with its own laptops.

Negroponte has hired a headhunter to help find a CEO and hopes to have one named by April or May.

The Cambridge, Mass., group aims to provide low-cost laptops to children in developing countries.

Maybe a Bill Gates is just what’s needed to get OLPC back on track and focused.

He wants someone to help manage the organization “more like Microsoft,” according to the article, rather than like the “terrorist group, doing impossible things” it’s been until now.
